From Passage Fitness to Basic Fit: a partnership that continues to grow
What once started as an assignment for general contractor Builthings grew into a unique specialisation for Elektro Kamiel Smet, part of EEG Group. For around thirty years, the teams have been delivering electrical installations for fitness clubs throughout Belgium. From the former Passage Fitness and Health City clubs to today’s Basic Fit locations: the concepts have evolved, but the technical challenges have remained just as engaging.
Basic Fit has since grown into a network of more than 220 clubs in Belgium. Over the years, Elektro Kamiel Smet has contributed to numerous locations in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Zaventem, La Louvière, Maasmechelen and Waregem, among others.
In addition to new clubs, the teams also carry out so-called rebuilds, where existing fitness centres are renovated and their technical installations are adapted to meet the latest requirements.
Specialised teams make the difference
Fitting out a fitness club requires a specific approach. Project timelines are generally particularly short, schedules can change quickly, and several contractors are often working simultaneously within a limited space.
To tackle these challenges efficiently, Elektro Kamiel Smet deploys specialised teams who are thoroughly familiar with both the technical requirements and the specific working conditions. Thanks to their many years of experience, they can respond quickly, adapt flexibly to changes and carefully coordinate their work with that of other construction partners.

Basic Fit Ladies Only in Brussels as a recent example
A great example of this expertise is the new Basic Fit Ladies Only in the ZIN building in Brussels, which opened its doors on 31 August 2026.
Elektro Kamiel Smet was responsible for the complete electrical installation. The works included the electrical distribution board, connections for the fire detection system, indoor and emergency lighting, data cabling, the patch panel and Wi-Fi infrastructure.
The scope also included project supervision through to the inspection of the complete installation.
Although this was a relatively compact project, it illustrates how the Elektro Kamiel Smet teams draw on their many years of experience to deliver a fully operational fitness club within a short project timeline.
