Multi-technical expertise for the new cardiac catheterisation laboratory at AZ Alma Eeklo

With the construction of a new cardiac catheterisation laboratory, AZ Alma in Eeklo is strengthening its cardiology care services for patients in the Meetjesland region. EEG contributed to the realization of two state-of-the-art cath lab rooms where reliability, safety and continuity of care are key priorities.

A major boost for acute cardiac care in the Meetjesland region

With the realization of a new cardiac catheterisation laboratory, commonly referred to as a cath lab, AZ Alma in Eeklo is significantly expanding its care offering for patients with heart conditions. As a result, patients from the Meetjesland region can be diagnosed and treated more quickly and closer to home.

A cath lab is a highly advanced environment where reliability, precision and continuity are essential. Especially in acute cardiac situations, every minute counts and every technical installation must operate flawlessly. For the realization of the two new cath lab rooms, several entities within EEG Group combined their expertise in one integrated multi-technical approach.

Multiple technologies, one integrated solution

EEG Sint-Martens-Latem was responsible for a significant part of the technical installations. The team provided additional cooling for two workspaces, cooling systems for the medical equipment in the cath lab rooms, and the necessary piping works for the air handling units.

In addition, EEG Sint-Martens-Latem installed a new electrical distribution board and carried out the cabling for the cooling systems and air handling units. A touchscreen with pressure monitoring was also commissioned in the rooms. Through EEG Digital Buildings, these systems are integrated into the hospital’s existing building management system.

Beltherm, part of EEG Ventilation, supplied and connected two air handling units and the associated ductwork. EEG Medical was responsible for the medical gas installations in both rooms.

The electrical package was also particularly extensive. It included medical transformers, lighting, fire detection, access control and an alarm system connected to the building management system.

By carefully coordinating all technical disciplines, a safe and high-performing healthcare environment was created, fully compliant with the strict standards and regulations of the hospital sector.

Technology serving care and safety

A cath lab is used to diagnose and treat heart conditions, often under urgent circumstances. Technical installations must therefore not only be reliable but also contribute to a safe, controlled and comfortable working environment for doctors and healthcare professionals.

The second cath lab room also serves an important backup function. If an emergency occurs or one room is temporarily unavailable, treatments can immediately continue in the other room. This ensures maximum continuity of acute cardiac care.

“Projects like this bring everything together: technology, precision and responsibility. We are not building a standard installation, but an environment where every component must contribute to safety and continuity of care.”

Close collaboration as the foundation

The realization of the new cath lab is also the result of close cooperation between AZ Alma and AZ Sint-Jan Brugge. EEG Group has been working with AZ Sint-Jan for more than twenty years on a wide range of technical healthcare projects.

Thanks to the collaboration between both hospitals, patients benefit from a clear and efficient care pathway. Continuous communication channels and detailed procedures for various care scenarios ensure strong alignment from diagnosis and treatment through to follow-up care and aftercare.

EEG’s multi-technical approach closely supports this collaboration. By combining the different technical disciplines within the group, all installations could be designed, implemented and coordinated as one integrated solution.

Faster care, closer to home

The opening of the cath lab represents a major enhancement of healthcare services in the Meetjesland region. Patients in need of urgent cardiac interventions no longer always have to be transferred to a more distant hospital.

Shorter intervention times can make a crucial difference in acute cardiac situations. At the same time, receiving care closer to home increases comfort for both patients and their families. The new cath lab also creates significant added value for local emergency services by enabling faster access to specialized care.

Building tomorrow’s healthcare infrastructure

With this project, EEG demonstrates how specialized multi-technical expertise can directly contribute to the quality and continuity of healthcare. The collaboration between EEG Sint-Martens-Latem, EEG Digital Buildings, EEG Ventilation (Beltherm) and EEG Medical resulted in an integrated solution where safety, efficiency and user comfort are central.

“Through our contribution to the realization of this new cath lab, we are actively helping to create a patient-centred and comfortable healthcare environment. The strength of our multi-technical approach is one of the elements that made a positive difference in this project. This project perfectly reflects our ambition to increase comfort for all building users. A fine example of craftsmanship that we can truly be proud of.”
